Is It Wild or Farmed? There are numerous species of wild catfish throughout the united states, however the vast majority of catfish that is eaten is farm raised. The Lobster Place carries farm raised Catfish.  

Where is it farmed? Catfish is the number one aquaculture product produced in the continental United States. It is farmed throughout Virginia, Alabama, Arkansas, Mississippi, and Tennessee. Catfish is also a major aquaculture product in China and Southeast Asia.

How is it farmed? Catfish is typically raised in man-made freshwater re-circulating ponds that are separate from natural waterways.

Where does The Lobster Place Source it? The Lobster Place procures catfish from its vendors in the New Fulton Fish Market in the Bronx. They source the product from domestic producers like Harvest Select Catfish and the Virginia Aqua-Farmers Co-Op

Is it sustainable? U.S. farmed Catfish is done so in an environmentally sustainable manner.  Catfish are farmed in closed, inland ponds using re-circulated water, which poses little threat of pollution, disease, or the escape of farmed Catfish impacting the diversity of wild populations. Catfish have feed ratios (the amount of dry feed required to produce one unit of wet fish in fish farms, typically expressed in pounds)  of 1.80:1 though they are fed a largely vegetarian diet of soybeans, corn and rice, which reduces the number of wild fish caught for feed.
